HPVienna funded
We’re thrilled to announce that our project HPVienna on the transdisciplinary surveillance of Human Papillomavirus with vulnerable communities will be funded by the Vienna Science and Technology Fund (WWTF).
HPV-associated diseases are a large Public Health issue. As the most prevalent STI, 80% of people will get infected with HPV over their lifetime. Most cases clear within 2 years, but 10% of infections persist and may cause cervicalcancer, head and neck cancer or other cancer types. There are many HPV genotypes, and different types carry different cancer risks. Vaccines covering up to 9 types are available, however access and uptake has historically been restricted by age, gender and geography.
Our HPVienna project team from Medical University of Vienna, University of Vienna and Technische Universität Wien will jointly tackle the complex challenge of HPV disease prevention in patients from marginalised groups. Expertise in transdisciplinarity and pathogen evolution, social science & medicine, epidemiological modelling & simulation will focus in a participatory approach on patients served by Diakonie AmberMed, the biggest healthcare provider for people without health insurance in Austria. By that, HPVienna aims to deliver genomic, social, modelling and societal outcomes for a groundbreaking transdisciplinary framework for preventive medicine.
Together with valuable stakeholders like City of Vienna, Aids Hilfe Wien, Dachverband der Sozialversicherungen, Gesundheit Österreich GmbH, International Vaccine Institute (IVI), Österreichische Gesundheitskasse, FEANTSA, European Cancer Organisation, we will leverage academic and practical knowledge with lived experience of all involved participants to deliver a policy blueprint supported by cutting-edge scientific & societal results.
